First Place!

I recently won 1st place in the KGSR summer t-shirt design contest! I'm pretty excited. Unfortunately the 17th Annual Austin T-Party being held at Stubb's BBQ is right around the time I will be in San Francisco. Blast. A big thanks to all those who voted on my design!

Bryan Keplesky

Say hello to Bryan Keplesky, probably my new favorite graphic designer in Austin (out of the very few that I know), who is one of the head honchos over at Misprint Magazine. Misprint is a great free, often humorous, magazine that you can find around town every now and again that offers up a wide variety of topics. Say you are having trouble deciding a victor in a battle between, say he-man and skeletor....or Morrissey and a T-rex, Misprint has your answer!

Check out back-issues of Misprint at their website here: Misprint

Also be sure to check out Keplesky's personal work at his website: Round Object

I love the show posters!

If you need a graphic designer...well, call me first but if I don't answer, be sure to holler at this guy.

Massacre

Ok, the new Brian Jonestown Massacre album My Bloody Underground is horrible but apparently the pitchfork staff literally wiped their asses with the CD case. Don't buy this album by the way, you can have my copy.

review: a massacre...get it

The Evildoers / Stax Nite

Check out the Evildoers, a great band from Austin, TX. They've got a nice honest 1990s indie rock/pop thing going with zero rock star posturing. I saw them at red eyed fly last night and really enjoyed the show. Oh, and I, uh, work with the guitar player.

Oh, and this looks like its going to be really fun:

T-shirt Design

My new t-shirt design for the KGSR 107.1 summer t-shirt competition. Maybe I'll win!

BlissBleep

photo
Here's a nice little piece on Bleep by, as I've mentioned before, one of my favorite music writers, Simon Reynolds. The musical genealogist in me has always loved trying to dig up old music (and even genres) that I've never heard of before in attempts to better understand a current style that I might be digging at the moment (dubstep or grime for example). Bleep was the British transmutation of Chicago and Detroit house and a precursor to 2step, jungle, drum&bass, dubstep to grime. Most of these tracks came out around 1990, which would have made me 11 at the time...in Clinton, Mississippi. This music might as well have been coming out of stereo speakers on some desolate planet eons away from my tape deck. You (unless you know more than me about Bleep) may recognize a few like LFO and Nightmares on Wax

You will have to scroll down a bit after the jump but there's also a really nice primer on Grime before the piece on Bleep.

Throwback Tracks: Northern Exposure Vol. 1

northern exposure
Sasha & John Digweed
Northern Exposure Vol. 1
1997

I've been listening to Sasha & John Digweed's celebrated trance mix classic Northern Exposure Vol. 1 while at work laboring away. Now I know trance music went way out of vogue for a while there but I feel much of it (including this) has stood the proverbial test of time. Organic (free-range) trance with an ambient yet up tempo feel, Northern Exposure will definitely "tranceport" you out of your swivel chair for an hour or two.

The Best Record Stores in Austin, TX

I'm traveling to San Francisco at the end of this month. While I'm out there I had planned on doing some record shopping, only I haven't the faintest where to find the best shops. I've been hoping I could find someone's blog (I'm sure there is one out there but I haven't found it yet) detailing the best places in San Francisco to pick up an album or two. I know the popular record store in town is Amoeba (http://www.amoeba.com/) but thats all I know of. Anyway, I thought I'd list my favorite record stores for anyone looking to find the best spots to grab that new album you've been searching for while in Austin, TX.

BACKSPIN RECORDS
http://backspinrecords.net/

Backspin is probably tops when it comes to what I'm looking for in a record store; chill atmosphere, a great selection of new and old in just about every category, two record players (technics no less) to preview before you buy, and they have free keg beer every now and then for events.
..............................................
We stock all these genres and more: Rock (Indie Rock, Classic Rock, Psych, Prog, Metal, 80s and Alt), Hip-Hop (Old School, Golden Era, Indie, Underground, and Commercial Rap & RNB) Dance (House, Techno, Electro, Freestyle, Disco, Italo, House, Breaks), Jazz, Funk, Jazz-Funk, Soul, R&B, Blues, Electronic, 20th Century Composers/Experimental, Classical, Soundtracks, Lounge, Exotica, Comedy, Spoken Word, and Country/Western. We carry a large selection of new vinyl as well.

While we do not like to pigeon-hole ourselves as a speciality store - we do have some of the best classic hip-hop and dance vinyl you are likely to find in Texas!

We pride oursleves on selection, quality, and price. First we try to put out good new records every day. We make sure those records are clean and defect free. If a record has a defect we always try to point them out and price accordingly. Despite the hard work we put in to this process, we still sell our records at affordable prices!

We really love records and we know you do too and that shapes our store's philosophy on used vinyl.

Our Hours are:
Tuesday thru Sunday 12-9
Closed Monday

Address:
4631 Airport BLVD - Suite 110-A
Austin, Texas 78751
Down the street from I Luv Video and near I35 in the Concorde Shopping Center.

WATERLOO RECORDS
http://waterloorecords.com/

The closest thing to a Tower or a Virgin (size-wise) that we have in Austin. Ask anyone in town where to buy the new Madonna or the latest hard-to-find Boxcutter import and they will probably say Waterloo. It can get a little crowded on the weekends and the staff can be hit or miss (usually hit) but the selection can not be beat and they have 10% off vinyl on Tuesdays....AND you can return your accidental crappy purchase before ten days, no questions asked.

Hours:
10AM to 11PM Monday - Saturday
11AM to 11PM Sunday

Address:
600A. North Lamar
Austin, TX 78703

END OF AN EAR
http://www.endofanear.com/

At End of an Ear, you feel like you're hanging out in someone's really cool basement. I dig it!
.................................................
Bringing you the best in indie pop, experimental, obscure, prog, psych, jazz, techno, folk, french pop, soul, funk, punk, lounge, reggae, hip-hop, techno and other sounds.

We hope to become the record store you've always dreamed about.

Address:
2209 South First Street
Austin TX 78704

ANTONE'S RECORD SHOP
http://www.antonesrecordshop.com

If you want to really feel like you're shopping in a record store that could only be found in Austin, this is the one to go to. Here you can always find a great record that you weren't even looking for.

Hours:
Mon-Sat 10-10
Sun 11-10

Address:
2928 Guadalupe
Austin, TX 78705

DJ DOJO
http://www.iscratchvinyl.com/

A record store and studio with the DJ in mind. They have a nice blog and website, check them out.

Hours:
12:00pm - 7:00pm every day

Address:
2201 S. First St.
Austin, TX 78704
Open Daily: 12-7pm

CHEAPO
http://www.cheapotexas.com/

The best used CD store in town. Cheapo isn't exclusive to Austin but its definitely a local staple. Located in the original Whole Foods grocery building, Cheapo will take at least an hour or two out of your day.

Hours:
Open Everyday - 9am to Midnight

Address:
914 N. Lamar
Austin, TX 78703

SOUND ON SOUND
http://www.friendsofsound.com/

Friends of Sound is a nice little mom and pop style record store located on South Congress. There are many great stores on South Congress to wander in and out of on a nice summer afternoon and you might as well stop by Friends of Sound to say hello. Last time I was there I picked up a great Friends of Sound mix by DJ coolhands and jkettle and a nice Bootsy Collins record.

Hours:
Sunday: Noon - 8pm
Monday-Thursday: 11am - 8pm
Friday-Saturday: 11am - 9pm

Address:
1704 South Congress (Rear)
Austin, TX 78704

lollipop

lil wayne
Lollipop by Lil Wayne, I'm sorry but this song is highly entertaining to me for some reason. I think its the constant use of the cheesy vocoder on the vocals throughout the song.
First heard on WJMI 99 JAMZ bitch!

My favorite links / I need links

Who works in front of a computer? I do. Its boring sometimes...many times. Anyway, here are a few of my favorite distractions whilst plopped in front of the computer. Oh and yes, I need new links! Give me your favorite!

- blissblog: The blog of English music critic Simon Reynolds. He actually has several blogs which are all linked up on the right hand side. The best music writer/critic you can find.

- the quietus: The Quietus is a promising new pop and rock website. They asked themselves, "outside of the niche press is there literally nothing that caters for the intelligent music fan between the age of 21 and, well, 73?", and Quietus was born.

- QBN: for a better tomorrow: If looking at vintage VHS movie covers from Sweden intersts you, then head over to QBN. QBN is a nice little link page for art, design and, well, anything aesthetically pleasing.

- drawn: I don't read comics anymore and I'm not an illustrator, but I usually check out a nice little cartooning and illustration blog called DRAWN!

- arts & letters daily: A&L Daily is a great distraction. Don't feel like surfing endlessly to find a great article to pass the time? Well then, give A&L a spin and choose between: article of note, new books, and essays and opinions.

Favorite internet tool: del.icio.us
